You can find a list of routers that come with ipv6 support out of the box here: http://www.sixxs.net/wiki/Routers
Not sure how up-to-date that is though.

Your Linksys wrt160n may be able to run the DD-WRT firmware (depends on the hardware revision of the box but it looks like some revisions do support it). Check these pages: http://www.dd-wrt.com/site/support/router-database

A tutorial for setting up ipv6 on DD-WRT enabled hardware can be found here: http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/IPv6_%28tutorial%29

You could also have a look at OpenWRT and Sveasoft firmwares.

Personally I have good experiences with Fritz!Box WLAN routers in combination with the Freetz addon for ipv6 support. I don't think they're available in the US though..

Needless to say that installing a 3rd party firmware in your Linksys is at your own risk.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Does anyone know if their routers are IPv6 enabled specifically Linksys WRT160N ? If so what models. It appears their web site does not document anything regarding IPv6.

Topic : Windows 7 randomizes addresses?

Hi Jo,

You are right. Windows 7 (Server 2008 & Vista as well) by default randomizes ipv6 auto-configured address selection. This is in violation with section 4 of RFC 2464 that mandates that the network identifier part of the IPv6 address is derived from the 48-bit MAC address for Ethernet (and Wireless) interfaces.
It may be that Microsoft chose to do this for privacy reasons..

For most users this will not be much of a problem but for those running a server it will. There is however a solution:

netsh interface ipv6 set global randomizeidentifiers=disabled

This will switch the feature off and address selection will be based upon the EUI-64 identifier, derived from the interface’s built-in 48-bit IEEE 802 address.

hi there
why does windows 7 randomizes its ipv6 address? It should be based on the mac address, right?

An interesting new slideshare presentation was just added:

IPv6: What, Why, How
Jen "Furry" Linkova
Openwall, Inc.
March 2009

Presentation (60 slides) to introduce those familiar with IPv4 to IPv6.
Covers both "executive" and highly technical topics, with a slight bias
on security and privacy. View it here.

Topic : Norton 360 is blocking neighbor solicitation on Vista

This took me a while to find out but may be of interest to anyone trying to run a autodiscovery setup on Vista with Norton 360 installed.
It appears that Norton is blocking the Neighbor Solicitation request which basically breaks everything. Changing the ICMPv6 traffic rule into an in- AND outbound rule fixed it for me.

Topic : Dibbler problem

I have problem with my dibbler installation. I am running it on Windows XP, I have configured it as a server with the /64 that was handed to me by provider and which is routed across my tunnel.
My Vista laptop does autoconfigure an address but it doesn't seem to get anything from the dibbler dhcp server.
Am I missing something?

There are so many books in your online shop. Any book in particular you would recommend reading?

thanks
Jo

That depends a bit on your level of expertise. If you're inexperienced in the matter then I can recommend IPv6 Essentials by Silvia Hagen. You can find it here or here (UK shop).

Happy reading! ;D

We're working hard on getting the new and improved IPv6.net website ready. The basics are in place and we will be putting it live soon so we can get feedback from visitors and and let the creepy search engine crawlers do their thang.. :-)
