Aeris CTO Hosain elected chair of IoT M2M Council

By Zenobia Hegde

Syed Zaeem “Z” Hosain, a founder and the chief technical officer at Aeris, was named the new chairman of the IoT M2M Council by the trade association’s Board of Governors at their annual meeting, held in November in Boston. With more than 25,000 members worldwide, covering 24 different vertical-market sectors, the IMC is the largest and fastest-growing trade organisation serving the IoT industry.

Hosain has been with Aeris – a technology provider in IoT – since 1996, when the company was founded, and has more than 38 years of experience in the semiconductor, telecommunications and computer industries. He has held leadership positions for several industry associations and technical standards bodies, and is the author of the book, “The Definitive Guide: The Internet of Things for Business.”

“By reaching out to buyers of IoT technology on such a large scale, the IMC can provide solutions providers with a natural platform to promote their products and services, and also learn about enterprise users and OEMs that are deploying the technology. For example, we have data that show a plurality of them self-identify as ‘operations’ – not ‘IT’ or ‘R&D’ – and now we’re digging deeper, and tracking if there are movements in these categories,” said Hosain.

To cultivate interaction between buyers and sellers in the IoT sector, the IMC has recently introduced a number of new programs, including a software widget survey-tool that tests a user’s readiness for IoT deployments and a template RFP program for its members that are interested in sourcing IoT software platforms.

The group has also been named as the exclusive organiser of the Consumer Electronics Show’s (CES) new area dedicated to IoT infrastructure – more than 6,500 square feet of exhibition space already has been booked for the January 2018 event to take place in Las Vegas.

“This is the first time CES will host a dedicated IoT area of this kind, and it’s a major achievement for the IMC. Our IMC mission is about bringing buyers and sellers together, and CES attracts tens of thousands of OEMs from markets that are crucial to the IoT,” said Hosain.

Infobip deploys mobile messaging platform for Tele2

By Zenobia Hegde

Infobip, the global communications platform for businesses, announced the rollout of its omnichannel enterprise messaging technology with Tele2. Delivered under the ‘Tele2 Messaging’ brand name, the deal brings new user engagement capabilities to the operator’s business customers.

Tele2’s customers now have access to Infobip’s enterprise messaging platform to reach more than 6 billion mobile devices around the world, and the ability to engage with their customers across multiple channels in a more advanced, user friendly, and secure way.

The group-level enterprise messaging agreement is the continuation of a longstanding A2P SMS messaging relationship between Tele2 and Infobip, and deployment has already started in Sweden, Estonia, and Latvia. It’s due to expand its European footprint with deployments in Lithuania and the Netherlands thereafter.

Tele2 can now offer multiple communications channels, including SMS, email, push notifications, Viber, and Facebook Messenger. As this is delivered through a single platform, Tele2’s business customers don’t need to rely on several disparate providers to design and deliver communications through different channels.

“Infobip is going above and beyond of just providing the messaging backbone to offer new capabilities, support, and long-time expertise to address various verticals. A2P messaging is growing rapidly as enterprises use it as a tool for marketing, customer engagement, and loyalty. We are so excited to build our partnership with Tele2, bringing the future of omnichannel technology to the Scandinavian market,” said Silvio Kutic, president and CEO at Infobip.

A centerpiece of Tele2 Messaging is the Infobip Portal user interface with powerful features including a campaign builder for multiple messaging channels, real time reporting, an intelligent recommendation system, and failover programming. The project will be powered by Infobip’s regional office in Stockholm.

Australian Smart Buildings company Quantify raises $5M in venture funding

Quantify Technologies, an IoT company that develops smart/intelligent building applications and solutions raised $5M in venture capital. It was raised by placing 83M shares to new and existing investors at 6 cents a share. Quantify will use the funding proceeds for the testing of an integrated Amazon Alexa/Q Device product developed by Quantify.

“These funds will also allow us to accelerate development of further enhancements and integrations of technologies such as Amazon Alexa to further redefine the IoT industry standard and to make our solution the platform of choice,” Mark Lapins, head of Quantify Technologies.

The Q Device by Quantify can be used to control multiple IoT-based in-home devices. The core solution can be deployed at the time of a building’s construction or retro-fitted later.

Rolling out IoT solutions across an enterprise is considered a tough ask, especially when organizations have heterogeneous system operating upon different standards. This is where Quantify makes a difference by eliminating the needs to install dedicated gateway devices or communications hubs. It offers a core control and reporting API for the purpose.

Arrow Electronics and Cypress team up to provide ubiquitous IoT connectivity

By Zenobia Hegde

Global technology-solutions provider Arrow Electronics, Inc. and Cypress Semiconductor Corp., a provider in wireless connectivity for the Internet of Things (IoT) have announced the Titanium board, a technology ecosystem designed to enable developers to create products using Wi-Fi®, Bluetooth® Low Energy (BLE), cellular and LPWAN technologies, while taking advantage of Cypress’ low-power edge computing capabilities.

The new Titanium board is designed to the Linaro 96Boards IoT edition specification, and features Cypress’ new PSoC® 6 microcontroller (MCU) with dual-core processing and BLE 5.0. With power provided by the Cypress EZ-PD™ CCG3 USB-C controller, Titanium also provides developers with advanced sensing capabilities featuring Bosch Sensortec’s new BME680 integrated environmental sensor for measurement of gas, humidity, temperature, and pressure. The platform is ARM® mBed-compatible, and features a 40-pin expansion connector compatible with other 96board platforms.

Developers can take advantage of the expansion capability of the Titanium board to evaluate multiple connectivity and technology options, including the upcoming Cypress WICED® mezzanine card currently in development.

Arrow and Cypress will make future announcements on new products within this technology ecosystem. Customers can register their interest in the PSoC 6 Titanium board and Cypress’ WICED product portfolio by signing up here.

Aiden Mitchell

The PSoC 6 MCU is a low-power, flexible MCU with built-in Bluetooth low-energy wireless connectivity and integrated hardware-based security in a single device. The dual-core ARM® Cortex®-M4 and Cortex®-M0+ MCU architecture lets designers optimize for power and performance simultaneously. The PSoC 6 MCU architecture’s easy-to-use, software-defined peripherals enable engineers to create innovative products, including wearables, industrial IoT equipment, smart home appliances, IoT gateways, portable medical devices and audio processing products.

“PSoC 6 is purpose-built for the IoT,” said Aiden Mitchell, vice-president of global IoT solutions at Arrow. “By combining the low-power of PSoC 6 with Cypress’ WICED portfolio of Wi-Fi solutions and Bluetooth products, Cypress has created a powerful offering for customers seeking to reduce complexity and time-to-market. The Titanium ecosystem is their starting point.”

“The Titanium 96board gives IoT designers a fast and easy way to harness the leading low-power and flexibility of our PSoC 6 BLE solution,” said Jack Ogawa, senior marketing director of the MCU business unit at Cypress. “The Titanium ecosystem adds even more flexibility with a host of expansion cards, helping designers find the optimal mix of technologies.”
