New research shows industrial organisations increasingly focused on IoT adoption, but most are still in early stages

Bsquare, a provider of Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) solutions, released the findings of its first annual IIoT Maturity Study. This explores the current IoT adoption progress of business buyers in Manufacturing, Transportation, and Oil and Gas (O&G).

According to the 2017 study, 86% of industrial organisations are currently adopting IoT solutions and 84% believe those solutions are very or extremely effective. In addition, 95% believe that IoT has a significant or tremendous impact on their industry. However, the study also shows that most IIoT investments are focused on connectivity (78%) and data visualisation (83%). In addition, only 48% are doing advanced analytics on that data and only a small number (28%) are automating the application of insights derived from analytics.

“Our study shows that while industrial organisations have enthusiastically adopted IIoT, a majority have not yet moved to more advanced analytics-driven orchestration of data insights,” said Kevin Walsh, vice president of marketing at Bsquare.

“These later stages of IIoT maturity—analytics, orchestration and true edge computing—tend to be where most of the ROI is realised. This is especially important because, according to our study, the number one reason cited for IIoT adoption is cost reduction.”

Bsquare’s 2017 Annual IIoT Maturity Study was conducted in the United States in August 2017, and reached more than 300 respondents at companies with annual revenues in excess of $250 million (€214.53 million). Participants were evenly divided among three industry groups (Manufacturing, Transportation, and O&G) and titles covered a wide spectrum of senior-level personnel with operational responsibilities, most of whom had spent an average of six years in their organisations.

Key highlights from the report include:

The vast majority (86%) of organisations are deploying IIoT solutions, led by Construction/Transportation (93%) and followed by O&G (89%) and Manufacturing (77%).
Nearly two-thirds (73%) of all businesses plan to increase their IoT investments over the next 12 months, despite almost every respondent acknowledging that IoT deployments are complex.
Nine out of 10 decision-makers feel it is very or somewhat important for their organisation to adopt IoT solutions. And 95% perceive IoT as having either a significant or tremendous impact on their industry at a global level.
Industrial organisations are using IoT most frequently for device connectivity and data forwarding (78%), real-time monitoring (56%), and advanced data analytics (48%). More mature uses of IoT, such as automation and enhanced on-board intelligence, are also prevalent in industrial settings.

More than 90% of IIoT adopters cite device-health as the primary reason for IoT adoption followed by logistics (67%), reducing operating costs (24%) and increasing production volume (18%).
More than half of organisations are using annual subscription models for their IIoT solutions, and 77% use a cloud-based model. Amazon and Microsoft were tied (14%) for the preferred cloud service provider.

The IoT Maturity Index outlines the stages commonly associated with Industrial IoT technology adoption. Each phase typically builds on the previous one, allowing organisations to drive maximum value as they progress through the index.

Cambridge Broadband Networks (CBNL), the provider of licensed point-to-multipoint (PMP) microwave and millimetre wave, has today announced the results of its ‘UK Enterprise Broadband Index’. The survey of 200 businesses, conducted by market research firm Mobilesquared, highlights the gap between enterprise connectivity demands and the services they receive. Almost unanimously, 89% of UK businesses said they would consider switching to wireless broadband. This is coupled with the fact all respondents admitted poor broadband has negatively impacted their performance over the last two years, but more than half (56%) have not changed provider.

These striking statistics highlight the challenges UK businesses face in sourcing and switching providers, along with the significant market opportunity that exists for disruptive wireless carriers.

“It’s clear that a growing number of businesses find their connectivity requirements are growing faster than many broadband services can keep up with,” said Lionel Chmilewsky, CEO, CBNL. “To promote economic growth, it is essential that businesses have access to a greater range of agile broadband solutions which can scale more effectively with demand. This trend is likely to see operators drive more innovation into networks over the coming years, leverage emerging technology and develop 5G fixed wireless services.”

CBNL’s survey highlights that almost half of UK businesses (47%) are not receiving the broadband speeds advertised by their provider. Additionally, one in three businesses (35%) said that they have been negatively impacted by slow broadband speeds, while 34% experienced significant periods of network downtime. This new data clearly shows businesses are looking for faster and more reliable broadband options, yet half (56%) choose to remain with their current providers.

When asked why they opt to stay, one in three (32%) wanted to avoid disruption, 23% were tied into lengthy contracts, while 16% were restricted to services provided as part of a building lease. Moreover, one in ten (10%) suggested they would change at the earliest opportunity, demonstrating an appetite for viable alternatives.

The research highlights the significant market opportunity for disruptive carriers, with 89% of companies stating they would consider moving to wireless services if the speed and reliability was comparable to, or greater than, their existing broadband. With pre-5G fixed wireless commercially available, carriers have an immediate opportunity to leverage more agile and cost effective solutions that can quickly address this demand.

The need for more efficient infrastructure is illustrated by the fact that over half (56%) of businesses spend less than 30% of their IT budget on connectivity. More importantly, less than half of all respondents plan to increase expenditure over the next 12 months. This divergence between enterprises’ connectivity expectations and their connectivity expenditure highlights the importance to operators of innovation, in order to sustain and improve long-term network profitability.

A new white paper from Navigant Research, commissioned by Huawei, examines the strategy and execution of 20 leading smart cities in the United Kingdom, highlighting each city’s strategy, key projects, and overall readiness to execute its smart city vision.

The white paper, UK Smart Cities Index, was commissioned by Huawei UK, and evaluates the UK smart city market, with a focus on two dimensions: Strategy and Execution. The Strategy dimension assesses each city’s vision, goals, and objectives as they relate to its smart city program.

The Execution dimension assesses the city’s actual achievements from initial projects to full-blown deployment of innovative technologies and services. Cities are profiled, rated, and ranked with the goal of providing an objective assessment of the relative strengths and weaknesses of their smart city programs. IoT set to fuel the next Green Revolution in the farming industry, finds Inmarsat

With pressure on land and food resources set to increase, the Internet of Things (IoT) will play an increasingly important role in helping the agriculture sector become more efficient, productive and sustainable. This is according to new independent research commissioned by global mobile satellite company Inmarsat which found that spend on, and interest in, IoT is set to rocket over the next five years within agritech.

Market research specialist Vanson Bourne interviewed respondents from 100 large agritech companies across the globe for Inmarsat’s ‘The Future of IoT in Enterprise – 2017′ report, and found that the sector is rapidly taking to IoT technologies. 62% had already fully or partially deployed IoT-based solutions, far outweighing the adoption levels seen in the mining, transport and energy sectors, and a further 27% had plans to do so within the next six months.

Moreover, the spend on IoT-based solutions is set to increase dramatically over the next few years. Today, about five per cent of agritech businesses’ IT budgets are spent on the technology; a figure that is expected to more than double to around 12% by 2022, indicating how important IoT will be for the sector going forward.

Commenting on the findings, Ayan Jobse-Alkemade, director of Sector Development Agriculture, Inmarsat Enterprise, said: “With the planet estimated to reach a population of 10 billion people by 2050, humanity will face challenges with sustainable water sources, food production, and the best use of land to get the maximum yield from crops. Additionally, using the most efficient method to deliver the resources will increasingly feature on the global agenda. In short, farmers, with the help of the agritech sector, need to get smarter, leaner and faster from field to fork.

Thyssenkrupp extends predictive maintenance benefits of MAX solution to more than 40,000 customers

As the challenges of urban mobility grow, thyssenkrupp continues to transform how it delivers service in the elevator industry, which transports over a billion people each day and is valued at US$44 billion/year(€37.26 billion/year).

After teaming up with Microsoft in 2015 to launch MAX, the first predictive maintenance solution for elevators enabled by Microsoft’s cloud platform Azure, thyssenkrupp has now connected more than 110,000 elevators with the IoT-based system, enabling the reduction in downtime for 41,369 customers across 48,340 sites. MAX collects and sends real-time data from connected elevators to the intelligent cloud, where the remaining lifetime of each elevator’s key components and systems are calculated, determining which parts will require maintenance and when.

Speaking at StartupCon 2017 in Cologne, thyssenkrupp Elevator CEO Andreas Schierenbeck says, “We developed MAX because we knew that elevator service could be done much better than the industry norm. With an estimated unavailability of 190 million hours worldwide each year, we felt that the uptime of the world’s 12+ million elevators could certainly be improved.

And now the benefits from MAX are real: reduction of downtime for our customers, reduced service intervention times for our technicians, and in some cases we have been able to solve a problem before the customer even knows there is one. With M2M learning, the benefits of MAX will just keep getting bigger and better.”

The over 110,000 connected units comprise approximately 10% of thyssenkrupp’s global maintenance portfolio. After starting out in North America and Europe, Asia has now joined the MAX network with over 8,000 connected units in South Korea. While expanding in these regions, thyssenkrupp is also focusing on rolling out the end-to-end process to go fully predictive and planning launches in additional countries – namely Brazil and Portugal.

Soon, MAX will also be offered for escalators and third-party elevators as well, ensuring customers can benefit from maximum uptime regardless of whether they use a thyssenkrupp elevator or not.

In combination with MAX, thyssenkrupp is steadily incorporating the use of Microsoft HoloLens in its field operations. Technicians are starting to work hands-free while on the job using the in-built Skype app in HoloLens devices, making remote calls to more experienced colleagues who can walk them through solutions and provide them with valuable on-site education. The result is significant savings in time and stress and improved customer service.
